Jungle rivers Big Game Fishing on Rio San Juan, Nicaragua & Costa Rica #69 12th of June 2005
Fishing Report for San Juan River area months of May and June 2005
We report the usual good fishing since several week , with the presence of a lot of new tarpon coming up river from the Caribbean sea. plus our usual resident tarpon who wish to compete...River has grown tarpon are more active "there is a lot more water" sardines/minows can stay in shallow Ponds or in grass along river shore...a bit more difficult for tarpon , so they get more aggressively toward our lures and bait..in main river.. Talking lures we have been recently experimenting new Lures for some of our Conventional fishing ...the true is than results have been poor so we will go on using our traditional Rapala Floating Magnum and Super Shad Rap.
We had a poor week when a Tropical storm/Hurricane Hit Salvador...Far from us but presence of Hurricane change the wind direction, we had South Wind??? ( Absolutely unexpected at that time of the year ) and this did close the mouth of tarpon..Many of them present but very difficult to have them bite..This is the first time in 5 years than this happen to us...Fortunately it only last 5 days..
Fishing for Rainbow bass in close Solentiname archipelago have been good...no monster but some 6/7 lb .. and of course the usual abundant Wapote and Mojara... We successfully experienced new lures..
We are making some improvement in our Guest house with the addition of three new bed room, and also coming soon a solar energy system for electricity...
Booking is growing for our traditional high season from December till end of May beginning of Next year it is time to make reservations..., on the contrary booking is slow for coming months and this is a pity as it is a very interesting time of the year to come...Cooler weather and more aggressive Tarpon.
I am working on the idea of a Tarpon Tagging Program, we have the oportunity to tag large quantity of tarpon here.. I think than such a program may contribute to a better knowledge about the "Silver King" so many aspects of their life remaining a mystery... Strange behaviour also...Can someone give me an explanation upon the fact than we have so many Tarpon here in Fresh water at 120 miles from sea...I have some ideas but nothing certain.. any sugestions are more than welcome...
Still with this idea of lack of information concerning tarpon behavior ...I like to try to open soon a Tarpon fishing forum, anybody willing to contribute is welcome...will soon publish the Web direction , all readers of this News letter are more than welcome to help on this Project..

* With same length tarpon we catch here are heavier , fatter than the one of the Caribbean this is due to abundance of food..
* There is really an incredible quantity of tarpon here, of all size here. Many time " we made " some IGFA world record ... Obviously "this do not count" as these record fish are not official ( Not registered..) reason is we do not wish to kill fish ( We catch and release ) among these "record" we beat : Children boys and Girl , Men 8lb , 12lb , Women 12lb .. In a trip with us 99% of the guests tarpon released to the boat
* We are in June in the rainy season .. level of water in San Juan River is growing ...Good time of the year to come as more rain , less heat so more active tarpon , more bite.. Note Rainy season here is Rain, sun, rain , sun.. but nothing major...* Concerning Rainbow bass ( a very good fighter ) than we catch in close Solentiname Archipelago .30 mn away from Lodge Fishing for them is good all year round...* We are very busy from December till April. To be able to choose a specific week during that time of the year it is necessary to make early reservation ... I wish and recommend to come from may till November... traditionally we are less busy and there is also a lot of fish around....Rain really is not a problem , Sun rain, sun rain , sun rain.. all day long.. after every rain tarpon bite..
* I like to say to describe my trips as once suggest me a guest " while only fish when you can have much more " , it is really an off the beaten track destination than I offer, For example Birdwatching is worth the trip for itself...Wild life is all around ..Tropical jungle is impressive...My trip are also a way to meet local people...we generally take lunch on River shore down river in Local people house...or go to close small town of San Carlos..at night for dinner or Dancing..Everywhere people are incredibly friendly...( This contact with local people will bring you exceptional memories..)
*Another fact is than we have all year round an incredible quantity of fish in our spots...But the best of all is probably than also we are alone on the river..and nowadays this is a major Privilege..
*We put special attention on quality of meals at Lodge...Paola our Chef start to be famous..Local meals but also a lot of French and Italian style cooking
