Fishing report #1 : 27th of September 2000

Tarpons are back and fishing is top now in Rio frio river , Cano Negro, Playuela, Sabogal, Lagartera ...
No need to go far away, Tarpons are so abundant that they are even hit from the pier in Los chiles by local people casting with ''so..so..'' light equipments., hits happen at any time of the day.. ( 80 to 180 lb fish ) and always finish in the same way..1...2..,eventually 3, jumps and by by...without a boat it's almost impossible to suceed.
For the bigest Tarpons : 200lb and more... the best time of the day is between 11 am and 3 pm ???? Trolling slowly Rio Frio river
I had a lot of fun with my guide on Saturday the 16th when I did hit a major one witch troll the boat for 1 hour ( We where exeptionaly using a Small 12 ft aluminium boat with a 10 hp as ''Julia Brava ''our main 21 footer was under repair.. ) . This fish ( much more than 200lb ) did jump only one time on the hit and then went down the river on about 2 miles , playing all kind of tricks going to the shore , looking for bush etc etc... this fish is the tuffest I had the pleasure to fight since one year that I did open this fishing operation..After one hour and with a broken road he finally win by passing behind a log ... nothing to do line ( 25lb ) did breack...
Conclusion even if it is very funny to fish with such a small boat it is very dificult to suceed...Risky also as it would be crasy to get close to such a fish before exausted... But I will try again ...

This kind of fun is what I really enjoy the most in my fishing there ..FISH HAS REALLY A LOT OF POSSIBILITIES ( Getting a trophy fish in open fresh water or at sea is OK but in reality easy for a regular angler using the right equipment it's only a mater of knowhow on using the reels , and strengh ..in our 40 to 80 yards wide river it's another story.... ( Sorry if I did ofended anybody...)

When fishing with Julia Brava and Agusto ( my guide ) as a captain fight last between 20 to 40 minutes ...

It's a fact than Tarpon did now enter our Rio Frio river and Caño Negro where they concentrate ... I have no idea why? But every year it's the same..
Allyear long we have a basic population of very big Tarpon we suspect these do not go back at sea , but move between Cano Negro and Nicaragua Lake..
What happen at this time of the year is that smaller ones ( 80/150lb ) are coming from the sea via San Juan River ( a trip of around 200km ) .Then the activity on the river become incredible there seem to be a kind of competition for teritories??? betwen our permanents and all the youngest ones.. anyway they all want to feed like crazy

I had a report of a friend of mine fishing the annual Tarpon tournament in San Carlos ( Nicaragua Lake ) on the 15th of September he had 6 tarpons in a day, using Rapalla...
At the same date I have been fishing Rio Frio we only had 1
Situation is diferent since last week my guide went fishing yesterday the 26th of September with 3 clients, they had 3 tarpons 2 on casting , 1 on trolling fishing 4/5 hours... acording to my guide Augusto they would have had much more if they would have done only trolling.

Another fact is than usely when we are trolling the river , we catch Tarpon , but also Machaca ( their favourite pray ) , also Snooks , drums... and in season also a lot of gar fish. Nowdays we only have tarpon hits .. Obvious tarpon are so abundant than all the other species are carefully hidden in the bush....

This top fishing situation is expected to remain the same until the middle of January as it is every year.

We are booked on the 23, 24 25, 26 of October: Tarpons fan from France who used to Fish Sierra Leone , then on the 4,5,6 of November with some clients of last year ..We have some other option but no more ferm reservation so ...
