Fishing report #3 4th of November 2000

Last week 30 of October till 3 of November we went fishing Nicaragua waters From Los Chiles Costa Rica . Aboard our boat Julia Brava : Paul from USA , Philippe Tisseaux, Augusto our guide , and Juan a friend from Los chiles ,

Monday We did left San Josť at 9 am fishing did start at 2 pm from the pier in Los Chiles we have been fishing till 5 pm . We did fish Rio Frio river where we had a snook , a Roncador and several Machaca...No tarpons

On Tuesday we did under Nicaragua , we had to make all the formalities paper work for imigration, boat entry , fishing license etc .. etc.. so we did start fishing only at 1 pm
First tarpon did hit at 1pm 15 ( No much to wait ) 110/120lb released at the boat after 45 minutes..., 30lb test line ,with peen senator trolling reel ...Rapalla
We did put the line again and around 2 pm 15 another hit and fight for 2 hours 20 minutes!!!! on Ande 20lb line test , same small pen senator , Rapalla ..and a harder rod ( Probably too hard for the line ) this fish did troll the boat down river on around 1 miles and a half...We had the fish several time to the boat finally fish did give up but we did put a little bit too much of pressure on the line so break and we could not release it properly and he went with the lure...This fish was for me over 150 lb..easy...
Too late to fish more we went back to hotel in SanCarlos

Wednesday Morning we did start at 7 am...
First hit at 7am 15...fish gone with the lure after few jumps...120lb
Second hit at 7 30 same but on a fish witch was hudge I would say much more than 200lb gone with my favourite lure...
Third hit around 8 15 ..same but with a smaller fish around 100 lb we saved the lures that time...our last one of this class.
Then the climate did start to change and we had major rain and hit on trolling did stop we try and try with the lures we still had but nothing...
Problem has been the change of climate and also that most of the good lures where gone...
Around 1 pm we notice in a boca the presence of small tarpons between 40 to 80 lb... so we did start casting and had 4 all lost after jumps...

Thursday morning
We did start trolling at 7 am with again bad conditions and now dirty river so no tarpon hit on trolling ...Meanwhile we had around 10 am the bigest gar I ever had on my life around 1,40 cm long and so fat... It release itself while I was making pictures...Really big and strong my guide Augusto could not hold it...( he is strong , born on the river banks , but him also never had such a big one...)
Same day we still did troll and explore as the weather was still very bad...and then stop again for casting in a good spot where we had 3 small tarpons around 60/80lb,,,
We did discover on this day some special spots where we will be back with the same team and apropriate lures...Especially on a small but deep river entering the Rio San Juan where local people did report us the presence of the really big Tarpons I mentioned in preceding report. and we are after .the ones black on the back with Golden belley..I am talking of over 250lb probably 300 + for the bigest...

Friday morning still with bad condition, lot of rain we did fish 3 hours and explore and and nothing...It was time to go back to Los chiles than we reach at 11 pm and back to San Josť where we had to be before 4 pm...

This is basically what I can report concerning this trip , 12 tarpons on line several to the boat, ( I forget one because Augusto tell me we had 13 ? ..) one very big Gar.
The unusual change of weather , make the river dirty , also we did lost the best lures in the
first day and a half... WITHOUT THESE PROBLEMS WE WOULD HAVE DONE MUCH BETTER .
We plan to go back there soon and also go to Solentiname for having fun especially with HUDGE RAINBOW BASS...
Strange fact is that while in Nicaragua we did not catch a single snook , even if we new they where around ( The big Colla amarilla ) We figure they where at the entry of the lake where local people where catching them at night in small boats... anyway they where not in the rivers...and we had no time to fish the lake
